Louisiana Bill Requires Disclosure on Foods with Certain Additives

From artificial dyes to synthetic sweeteners, state food additive regulations continue to heat up. Less than a week after Texas signed SB 25, requiring warning labels on foods with 44 additives banned abroad, Louisiana is taking action with a similar bill.

Signed into law on June 27, 2025, Louisiana SB 14 requires packaged foods sold in the state with any of 44 additives to display a QR code that links to more information. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., joined the Louisiana governor for the signing of the bill as part of the growing movement of state legislation around Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative.

What the Louisiana Law Requires for Food & Beverage Labels

The new law applies to food and beverage products sold in the state that contain certain synthetic colors, sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame, preservatives, and other additives already restricted abroad to include a QR code on the label that links to a webpage containing additional information about the additive starting on January 1, 2028.

The webpage must include the following disclaimer language:

“NOTICE: This product contains [insert ingredient here]. For more information about this ingredient, including FDA approvals, click HERE.”

The disclaimer has to link to the FDA’s webpage about food chemical safety.
